Neurodivergent Friendly Hubs and libraries
As part of working towards a Neurodivergent Friendly Cardiff, we have received Shared Prosperity Funding and are working with our Hubs and libraries to make them more accessible and inclusive for people who are neurodivergent.
We have Neurodiversity Workplace Champions trained by DoIt Solutions who can support colleagues to promote and develop neurodivergent resources in their workplace.
Hub staff have also attended training delivered by Autentic to better understand:
- communication,
- spaces, and
- language that supports neurodivergent people.
You can find out some of the ways that we are making our Hubs and libraries more Neurodivergent Friendly.

Virtual tours
We have filmed tours of 20 of our Hubs and libraries so you can pre-plan your visit and familiarise yourself with the space. In these virtual tours you can find:
- links to activities that are taking place,
- information about services,
- sensory maps and floor maps,
- information about when the Hub or library will be busy, and
- an opportunity to give feedback about your virtual visit.
Sensory resources
Neurodivergent Friendly Cardiff Hubs Project, Scope Youth Group and Neuro Roots Youth Group have coproduced a collection of sensory resources to make study spaces more accessible for those with sensory needs.
The youth groups chose a clear plastic bag so that you can see the contents and feel confident that they have resources you want to use before borrowing them. Larger items such as desk mats, space dividers and back rests are also available.
The sacks contain items such as:
- fidget toys,
- sand timers,
- colour overlays,
- desk fans
- lamps,
- mindfulness colouring activities, and
- ear defenders.
We also have sensory resources and specialist furniture for younger children to use during their visit, such as:
- backpacks with toys,
- sensory light tables, and
- spinning chairs.

Sensory calming spaces
Sensory nooks and quieter areas will be available in our Hubs for you to use if you are feeling overwhelmed or anxious. Interactive sensory nooks support self-regulation and calming and contain sensory technology such as:
- vibrating seat pads,
- twinkle carpets, and
- ultraviolet lighting that can be controlled.
You will find sensory nooks at these Hubs:
- Ely and Caerau
- Canton,
- Llanedeyrn,
- Llanrumney,
- Penylan,
- Rumney
- Radyr
- St Mellons,
- STAR
- Llandaff North, and
- Fairwater.
